High at 19

I was a sports photo stringer for two local newspapers when I was a teenager in northern Virginia. One evening, when I was just 19 years old,  I convinced the powers that be at the Capital Centre, home of the Washington Bullets, to let me photograph the Bullets – 76ers game from the catwalk directly over a basket. All I have from that experience is this single copy from the next day’s newspaper showing Elvin Hayes attempting to stop Dr. J from scoring.

He Made Medical History

On Thanksgiving day, Army Dr. Col. Craig Shriver did what had never been done for a combat wounded soldier. The bullet-scarred pancreas from an Air Force Airman who was shot in Afghanistan was flown from Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington to the University of Miami, where insulin-producing cells were salvaged from the organ and flown back to be dropped into the man’s liver.
